Training

DGT-run is a supreme test of one’s ability to handle a continuous, long distance at altitude while carrying all necessary personal supplies and safety gear in true expedition style. Add in the focus required to self-navigate and the mountain savvy necessary to to deal with unpredictable weather in an inhospitable environment, and it becomes clear that there’s no scope for winging it.

Because there is no other event in Southern Africa that can compare to DGT-Run, and because mountains have a way of exposing over-confidence, we highly recommend that entrants spend some time in the Drakensberg, however we have removed the compulsory Training Camps as a requirement for entry. We strongly advise that runners spend time in the Drakensberg as part of their preparation for the event.

Aside from the physical fitness required to cover the distance and terrain, each runner who toes the start line should have the skills and mental capacity to look after themselves up in the mountains. Focus on the following aspects:

  • Navigation using GPS and compass and map

  • Exposure to altitude

  • Night navigation

  • Weather - knowing when to seek shelter (and where and how) and when to push on and push through

  • Appropriate gear for extreme mountain conditions

  • Sleep strategies

  • Nutrition needs

  • Pack configuration

  • Local insight - speak to everyone you can find who has done a DGT !

You are welcome to contact us to discuss options for excursions into the mountains.
